Saturday games started early at various gyms across the snow covered North Shore.  Both Handsworth and Terry Fox took care of business in consolation semi final games setting up their meeting in the Consolation Final.  The Ravens and Royals were playing after only a 90 minute break the game quickly turned to an offensive shootout.  The game was tied at 18 after only 4 minutes of play with Fox taking a 2 point lead at the end of the first quarter.  The Terry Fox Ravens seemed to build momentum heading into the locker room at the break but Handsworth answered back in the third quarter taking the lead over the provincially ranked Ravens.  In the end it was the depth of the 19 man roster of Terry Fox that proved to be too much for Handsworth.  Tournament All-Star Liam Hancock of Terry Fox again led Fox in scoring with 29 points and And Deo chipped in 14 in a solid effort.  The Royals were led by the 3 point shooting of Kevin Franklin, the playmaking of Mike Lim and the solid inside play of Ben Tucker.

In the tournament Semi-Finals Burnaby South easily took care of Oak Bay with a 64-34 victory in the early game, while the Claremont Spartans edged the Charles Tupper Tigers 49-46 setting up the meeting between the two top teams in the tournament in the 6:30 Final at Balmoral.

In the fifth place game the Elphinstone Cougars took on the Maruaders from Pitt Meadows.  The Cougars tandem of Nathaniel Haglund and tournament all-star TJ Turenne led the Cougars all weekend and did so again leading Elphinstone to a 68-46 victory.

In the third place game the Tigers of Charles Tupper took on the Bays of Oak Bay with the Bays holding on forr a 51-41 victory.  Tupper's pressure in the 4th quarter reduced the lead to 4 points but in the end Oak Bay was able to solve the Charles Tupper press and hold on for their victory.  DJ Sugue and Saurev Acharya of Tupper and Noah Harris and Jack Mackinnon of Oak Bay were solid for their respective teams all weekend and received All-Tournament recognition for their efforts.

The tournament final looked like it was going to be a battle of attrition as both teams were sluggish offensively in the first half.  Burnaby South led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter and Claremont took a 17-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.  Claremont came out strong in the 3rd quarter and looked like they were ready to take control of the game maintaining a 6-10 point lead most of the third and fourth quarter but Burnaby South would not fold. South pressed in the fourth quarter and got to as close as 2 points but in the end Claremont held on for a 49-46 victory.  Burnaby South's agile guard, Martin Bagajev and their post man Djorde Obradovic earned tournament all-star selections for their consistent play throughout the weekend. Claremont guards Jonny Sandoval and Zac Christianson were solid at both ends of the floor and were also selected to the all-tournament team.  Claremont forward, Luke Collombin earned tournament MVP honours as he rebounded, scored and played strong defence throughout the tournament.

A great weekend of basketball for all the teams - good luck to everybody in their respective seasons !

NOTE TO COACHES - PLEASE CHECK SCHEDULE AS THERE HAVE BEEN SOME GYM LOCATION CHANGES ON THE SCHEDULE

In quarter final action tonite the highly ranked Claremont Spartans took on last years' tournament champion Pitt Meadows Marauders.  Claremont used their depth and athleticism to get out to an early lead which got as high as 20 points in the first half and cruised to a 57-48 victory in the early game at Handsworth Secondary in North Vancouver.  Luke Collombin of Claremont was selected Player of the Game.

In the other early game the very talented Burnaby South Rebels took on the Elphinstone Cougars who were coming off their upset win against the Terry FOx Ravens in Thursday night.  Burnaby South's aggressive 2-3 zone stifled the Elphinstone offence and South cruised to an easy 60-22 victory earning a berth in tomorrow's semi finals.  Player of the Game for Burnaby South was Matin Bogajev who dropped 30 for the Rebels.

In the late game at Balmoral the hometown Carson Graham Eagles took on the Oak Bay Bays from Victoria.  Carson played hard in the first half and was within striking distance at the half but Oak Bay poured it on in the second half and cruised to a 45-28 victory.  Oak Bay were led by player of the game Kieran Atkinson and Atlas St Paul Butler who chipped in with 14 points.

The final quarter final game of the evening saw the Sutherland Sabres of North Vancouver facing the Charles Tupper Tigers of Vancouver.  The game was extremely fast paced with both teams applying full court pressure at various times throughout the contest.  The teams went to the locker rooms tied at 29 at the half.  Tupper got out to a lead early in the second half which was never more than 8 but in the end the Sabres could not close the gap.  Four players were in double figures for Tupper and in end it was the balanced attack of Tupper which proved to be too much for Sutherland.  DJ Sugue was selected Player of the Game for Charles Tupper and Graddy Zubaidi led Sutherland scorers with 21 points.

Tomorrow's semi finals will see Oak Bay take on the Burnaby South Rebels at 12 noon, while the Claremont Spartans will take on the Charles Tupper Tigers at 1:30.  Both games will be at Balmoral with the winners meeting in the Finals at 6:30 PM

The 2012 North Shore Junior Invitational looks like it will be another great test for some of the top Junior Varsity basketball teams in the province.  The Pitt Meadows Mauraders Air Force (#15) will look to win their third consecutive Junior title and follow in the footsteps of their Varsity team who won the NSIT this past December. Five teams in the top 15 in the Provincial rankings will be participating in the tournament including the #2 team in the Province, the Rebels from Burnaby South.  The Burnaby South basketball program continues to develop some of the top teams in British Columbia and this year is no exception.  The Claremont Spartans from Victoria are ranked #4 in the Province and are expected to challenge Pitt Meadows in the bottom half of the draw.  Ex Handsworth coaches Sean Johnstone and Scott Ramsay will return to the North Shore behind the bench at Terry Fox, leading the #9 ranked Ravens into the tournament in a tough first round matchup against the Elphinstone Cougars (#7).  Elphinstone will lead the contingent of 6 North Shore schools who will participate in this years event.

It should be a great tournament – good luck to all the teams !
